Refers to refractory concretes which must be tempered with water and poured into a mold or behind forms. Heat must be applied at a controlled rate, but not until the concrete has set for at least 24 hours. Proper curing procedures will prevent excessive cracks. Sometimes, pre-cast panels or other shapes are made from castable refractories. Neuex makes these and cures and dries them in a controlled oven prior to shipment. Whether pre-cast or cast in place, castables are formulated with varying densities and aggregates to be either a high strength liner for most rugged service or an insulating castable to reduce heat loss through the lining. Lower density = lower strength = better insulating values.
